The Future of GoingSony (UPDATED)

An important message that everyone should read

UPDATE: I just wanted to touch base with you all, and let you know that an update is on the way. There are a couple of things I need to do before saying anything, but it shouldn't be more than a couple of days. Thank you all for your kind comments, and your patience.

As of this month, I have been working on GoingSony for 4 years. I have posted thousands of news stories, and hundreds of Lgndary Thoughts.

And it isn’t working.

I’ll be honest with everyone, I’m at a point in my life where I can’t keep doing this simply as a hobby. If it were up to me, I’d keep working here forever. But the reality is that if the site can’t support me, even just a little bit, then I will have no other option but to start thinking about my future somewhere else.

I spoke with Aaron (Cortjezter) a few days ago about the site as a whole and my current financial situation. While a specific solution was not found, we both agreed that the news blog style of GoingSony just isn’t doing it. And that an increase in news stories isn’t the answer.

So here is the deal. I am going to be taking some time to figure out exactly what role I will have here at GoingSony, if I have one at all. I love this site, and I love you all, but we have to start seeing significant growth if this is going to work. Something has to change, and I don’t want to rush into a decision this big.

To figure out what that change will be, I have decided to take next week off. Yup, you read that right. No news stories will be posted for the week of April 8th. This story will remain at the top of the site for that entire duration so everyone can see it, and hopefully give some insight. The amount of people that visit the site far exceeds the number of active commenters. I don’t expect much, but it would mean the world to me if everyone could leave a comment on what you would like to see from GoingSony in the future.

Like I said, I will be taking next week off so that I have time to seriously think about the future of the site, even if that future doesn’t include me. But I do have some early ideas. Below is a list of possibilities that I will be considering, and would appreciate your thoughts on.

  • An editorial focus (more articles and opinion pieces)
  • Live streaming
  • Podcast (This would be a long shot, but I’m curious about how much interest there would be.)
  • More personality (I’m very robotic in most things I write. This would be the opposite of that.)

This is a preliminary list of possible directions for GoingSony. I’m open to doing all of them, or none of them. I’m even thinking about changing my username to something more recognizable. Everything is on the table. So if you have any opinion at all, I would love to hear about it. You can leave a comment below, or feel free to shoot me an email by clicking on “contact us” at the bottom of this page.

To reiterate. Something has to change with GoingSony if it is going to be successful. I don’t know what the solution will be, but I will be taking next week off to try to figure out what can be done. If anyone has an opinion, please please please please let me know about it. Again, you don’t even have to make an account. Just send me an email.

Even though I won’t be posting news stories next week, I will still be around to respond to comments should people leave them. Thank you all for your support and understanding so far, I hope to hear from everyone in the coming week.

You can also send your replies to @GoingSony on twitter, or GoingSony at Gmail if you can't get the contact us form to work (hint: GoNintendo accounts work here too!)

Has it really been 4 years, time sure has flown by. It would be a shame to lose you.

As for the options.
-Editorials, I think are a great idea. I feel that they can generate content, and a greater range of discussion.
-Streaming, If you are going to be playing games on a PS4, then why not?
-Podcasts, a little iffy on this one, I think they could be good, but only if you could get some extra people to join you.
-Personality, I say never change. Better to be a bit robotic than to have some contrived response, in my opinion.
-Username, may I suggest "XxOneWingedSasukexX" though in seriousness, changing your username may be a bit weird for me, and I think it is simple and unique enough for people to recognize it and not confuse it with something else. Plus if you do change your username, wouldn't you have to change "Lgndary Thoughts" as well?

Anyway I hope you are able to make it work out.
(Also, I apologize in advance if anything I wrote is odd. I am usually sleeping this time of day.)

Thank you for your kind words, and your feedback.

To address a couple of your points:

I would never do a podcast with just myself. That would certainly be odd and I can't imagine anyone would be interested in that haha.

I am not robotic in my writing naturally. I write that way because I always felt news should be presented in a strictly factual way, with no commentary. So if I did change that approach, I wouldn't be forcing an opinion. I would simply start sharing the ones I have always had. I would be curious to know if this changes how you feel regarding a different writing style.

The only reason I am considering changing my username is because I feel it lacks uniqueness, and it doesn't really have anything to do with me. I admit, I am uncomfortable changing it too, as I love the name, but maybe something like Oni-Joe, or Lgndary-Joe would be better. (My name is Joe, just in case that wasn't obvious :P )

Thanks again for everything, I can't tell you how much I appreciate the feedback!

This is the main site I use for sony news. I'm just very busy and have no time for making comments and such. Sorry to hear you might be leaving cause I have no idea how to improve the site.

I visit this site daily for news and it is unfortunate that it may be going away. At one point I was visiting this site more then gonintendo. Is it possible to include ads or even make a Patreon? I am sure if every visitor was able to donate 3 bucks a month that would be more then enough to keep the site afloat. Please don't go Sad

Thank you so much for your comment, it means a lot to me.

Cort and I did talk about adding ads to the site, but unfourtuantly they wouldn't really generate anything significant. Patreon was also discussed, but both of us are hesitant to ask anyone for money. It is certainly something we are considering though, and it is nice to see it being suggested. Thanks again!

I've been following this site since it tried to launch with GoneMicrosoft and it would be sad to see it go away again. I have a few suggestions that could get more visitors to the site:

1. You are a sister site to GoNintendo. Use that to your advantage. Maybe collaborate with RawMeatCowboy on a cross-site project (for example: comparing the quality of a game that came out on the Switch and the PS4 Pro). I'm not sure how many people from the GoNintendo site know about this one,so there's potential there.

2. I do really like it when you put your opinion on news pieces on the site. It makes the story unique and add something to the site. Having more of that would work An editorial section would also be cool. Just try to find different stuff to talk about and not the same old things.

3. Live-streaming would probably be a good idea as well, especially if you can stick to a schedule. This will get the community involved and you can chat with them. It would be cool to see some games that aren't usually played in streams very often (indies). Plus, you can post the streams on the site as content.

Otherwise, I'd say just keep on getting all the news you can and posting. I appreciate all the hard work you've done throughout the years and it would be a shame to see you leave.

We are the sister site of GoNintendo, but in actuality I feel very separate from them. RMC is very busy, and I have actually only spoken with him once since I started here at GoingSony. I would, of course, welcome any sort of cross promotion but I don't expect it. Nintendo fans can be very different from Sony fans after all.

And thank you for the suggestions and words of encouragement! I would want to try live streaming on a schedule so everyone would know when to watch. Would you have any suggestions for days/times?

Maybe if rawmeat is up to it maybe merging content. So gonintendo could become gonintendo/sony or something like that. You would be in charge of the sony content and he would be in charge of the nintendo content. I personally don't need the personalized reviews and what not. I just come here for the news. You could just post the title and copy and paste the news with the source. That is all I need. I just like having a place to get all of my sony news. I hate how other places add that extra crap on. This is a lean news machine free of the fatty editorial pieces.

A good time for streaming? For me that would probably be like 8 or 9 PM as I'm on the east coast (EDT) so I'd be able to watch after I get home from work. And pretty much any day for streaming would work (except possibly Friday since people love going out on that day). Although on the weekends, you can have it any time during the day. I also thought of an idea: Community Game Night where the members of the site can get together and play a certain game for bragging rights. These could be part of the live streams or something different. Or think about creating a community on PSN. Just some more thoughts I came up with while writing this.

Also, when you consider GoNintendo is a sister site of GoingSony, why aren't there links to your site on GN and vice versa? Just a though, that's all.

I am also on the east coast, so I may shoot for Thursdays at 8 or 9 to start and see what happens. Thanks for the suggestion!

And a community game night also sounds like a good idea! We may have to grow a bit more for it to become viable, but I'll definitely keep this in mind.

As far as the links go, I have zero control over that. I only have the power to make posts on GoingSony. But I'll see about saying something to Cort!

I can't play games for the next 8 weeks cause I broke both of my hands, but I still check the site daily. I saw this notice last Friday when you posted it and I think the only way to get the site out there more is for it to be advertised more.

I wasn't here for the first one of the site, but I am still actively on go Nintendo, and threw them is how I found this site when it came back online, and I'm pretty sure I've been daily since. aside from Recently with my hands.

Either way man I love the site, it's the only place I go for my Sony news! I like how you write your articles, although I am definitely open to seeing more opinion-based articles if you continue the site.

I feel like the problem that this site has is it's not really put out there that much, like I found out about this site when it came back, when RMC posted it about it on go Nintendo, and he hasn't said anything about it since. No one else is getting your name out there, have you thought about doing giveaways on Twitter or something?

IDK man I love the site and it would be a darn shame to see you go.

Thank you for taking the time to comment even with a hand injury. It means a lot!

I can't speak for anyone over at GoNintendo. Even though they are our sister site, they have always felt very separate to me. Like I said in another comment, I have only spoken to RMC once since I started working here, which is a testament to how busy a guy he is.

And I used to do giveaways once a month. I was paying for them almost exclusively, and unfortunately I ran out of the funds to continue them. But you may see them come back if I can get more developers to donate the games.
